Members and supporters of the Labour Party here in Northern & Leith can’t help but to have been dismayed by recent events at national level since the Brexit vote.

Last year we nominated Jeremy Corbyn for Leader, members cast their votes as they saw fit, and we came together to help rebuild our party, win a council by-election, and campaign in the Scottish Parliament elections and the European referendum.

Our membership is increasing – something we welcome – join us here – https://join.labour.org.uk/

All our members, old and new, have been advised about their rights and responsibilities in the Leadership election. Our meetings have not been suspended because we’ve followed the necessary procedures to make sure they can still take place. On Saturday 23 July we’ll be having a welcome/briefing session for new members. On 28 July we have a workshop on Housing policy – a big issue for our community in the run-up to next year’s council elections.

Tomorrow night (Monday 18) the Executive will be sorting out the arrangements for a meeting where eligible members can decide if we wish to nominate a candidate for the election, and if so who that candidate should be. We’ll also be planning our activity for September and beyond.

Throughout all of this complex process our central aim will be to ensure that the maximum number of our members can play a full part in our democracy, subject to the rules.

And then we’ll start again.
