Owen Smith's Statement

It’s time to deliver radical politics

At the core of my vision for Labour's future is a set of radical anti-austerity policies that ensure Labour delivers prosperity. These ideas are based around my plan to tackle inequality through fair taxes, fair employment and fair funding.

I am standing to be Labour leader to stop the Tories destroying our country and to deliver radical policies in government. I have led campaigns that forced the Tories to make huge U- turns on plans to cut support for disabled people and Tax Credits. As leader I am determined to provide the most effective opposition possible and a radical government in waiting.

I grew up in South Wales during the 1984/85 miners’ strike and during those desperate times saw the power of politics to change the lives of people and communities for better or worse.

A leader to take on the Tories

After six years of Tory Government, Labour has never been more needed. The Tories have overseen a wages freeze, greater job insecurity, savage cuts to social security and our public services. The British people desperately need a strong and effective Labour Party, which can defeat Tory austerity and offer a positive future for Britain.

A candidate to unite the party

The Labour Party is the greatest force for good this country has ever known. Yet, the threat of division and possible split is very real and we cannot allow that to happen. I will bring our party together, to heal the divisions and ensure we get on with opposing this Tory government.

A plan for Labour's future

Jeremy has been absolutely right to move us to being an anti-austerity party. However, it is simply not enough to talk about anti-austerity, we need to set out a concrete plan to tackle inequality, deliver prosperity and hold this Government to account.

I have announced twenty radical, socialist policies to change our country:

  1. A British New Deal unveiling £200bn of investment over five years.

  2. Trust the British people to sign off any final Brexit deal either in a referendum or at a general election

  3. A pledge to build 300,000 homes in every year of the next parliament 1.5 million over five years.

  4. Immediately reinstate the Department for Energy & Climate Change and the Minister for Refugees both scandalously scrapped by the Tories

  5. Ending the scandal of fuel poverty by investing in efficient energy.

  6. A new Clause IV to make equality the defining mission of the Labour Party.

  7. Scrapping the DWP and replacing it with a Ministry for Labour and a Department for Social Security.

  8. Introducing modern wages councils for hotel, shop and care workers and a new Equal Pay Act

  9. Banning zero hour contracts.

  10. Ending the public sector pay freeze.

  11. Extending the right to information and consultation to cover all workplaces with more than 50 staff.

  12. Ensuring workers’ representation on remuneration committees.

  13. Repealing the Trade Union Act.

  14. Increase spending on health and social care by at least 4% in real-terms every year.

  15. Bring NHS funding up to the European average within the first term of a Labour Government.

  16. Reinstate the 50p top rate of income tax.

  17. Reverse the reductions in Corporation Tax due to take place over the next four years.

  18. Reverse cuts to Inheritance Tax announced in the Summer Budget.

  19. Reverse cuts to Capital Gains Tax announced in March 2016 Budget.

  20. Introduce a new wealth Tax on the top 1% of earners to fund our NHS.

Our party needs strong, unifying and effective leadership, with a radical vision for Labour’s future that is the kind of leader I will be.
